Decor Noir | Spring Cleaning

Since it’s almost summer, I’m right on time with my spring cleaning projects. I have some help around the house weekly but whenever there’s a season change, I spend one day helping the help do a big clean. Here are a few things on my agenda to do at home to get ready for summertime:

Spice Rack-I do more cooking outside in the summer and I don’t have the time to sort through all the spices to see what’s what. I just purchased two spice stacks  and I must say they are exactly what I needed. Now with labels on the outside drawers, I grab what I need and head to the grill. I haven’t finished labeling but you get the jist.

  • Rug Cleaning-I have two rugs for Autumn/Winter and another for Spring/Summer. The winter rug was picked up for cleaning on Friday and the summer one went down over the weekend. Yayy!
  • We are in a change of season and this is when I switch all of our clothes out. This time, I’m taking all old clothes and putting them into a donation bag right away. I normally pack away for next season but I can assess right now what I’ll be keeping so why put it off for tomorrow? It’s so hard to get rid of items though so I have to ask myself, do I love it? Do I use it? Could someone else benefit from it?
  • I’m normally all over the place when I clean. As I’m clearing clutter from my room, I may think of something in the girls’ room that I need to do so I drop what I’m doing in my room and head over there. I never make it back to my room so this time I am not going to zigzag. I’m working one room at a time, one section at a time, completing each area before I move on to the next.
  • In the kitchen, the menu drawer was a disaster. I purchased a binder (on sale at staples) and divided the sections into, restaurants, pizza, diners and breakfast. I 3-hole punched the menus and placed them in the binder. That freed up so much space!!

We also had a junk drawer that everything went into. I put a drawer organizer in there and threw out things I know we won’t be using. Side note, it’s amazing how many sauces we racked up from McDonald’s!

The car went for its spring detail this past Saturday too! I normally don’t let the kiddos eat in the car but since she was in need of a good cleaning, I let them have their way for a few months now. All the junk we accumulated is now in a plastic bag and that will make it so much easier for me to get rid of it. The sauces from McD’s were in the house and the toys, with those little baggies were all under my seats. Black Beauty is clean again and I’m thrilled!

We are rapidly approaching the last day of school and this is when we also go through all of the cute drawings, assignments, etc., that came home all year. We have a banker’s box with 13 pocket folders for each child and we are ready to go through all of our bags of papers and select only as many favorites as will fit in one folder. This way, memories from an entire school career will fit neatly on a shelf.

Lastly, all these toys!! If toys are taking over your house try my solution: When we hosted the pre-k potluck, I put a few toy bags away in a closet and the kids have yet to ask for them. You know what that means? DONATION. If they were missed, they would’ve asked for them. Ha!

I’ll be back with my closet project-CPR; Categorize, Purge and Rearrange. (This isn’t my original idea, I would love to share where I read it but I cannot remember the name of the book.) I will do that as a separate post so we can see each step-by-step change I make. I hope you are having a great day! If you are rearranging and cleaning, share some of your tips with me. Apartment Therapy has a few additional ideas to prep for the season. Out with the old, in with the dew! (that’s mine) :)

Great post. Everyone should do a spring clean. It is an essential part of normal life. Spring is a new beginning for nature, it has to be a new beginning for us, too. Getting rid of the useless stuff and the piled during the winter dirt is a good start.
