First Tuesdays: Just The Two of Us

Well it was supposed to be two but that changed. Having lots of kids running around your house is tough. Everyone is vying for my attention when I come home and sometimes I just want to be left alone. But how will I ever know what’s going on with them if I don’t get one-on-one time with them? I came up with First Tuesdays and yesterday was our first shot at it. The concept is, each month on the first Tuesday, one child will go to dinner with me at the restaurant of their choice so that we can catch up and bond over good eats. I don’t expect for the kids to keep a running journal of everything they wish to tell me but at least this will give them some much needed private time to talk about anything that may be bothering them. Even though we have good communication over dinner, that personal time is priceless.

I was excited about my first date because M’khai likes food and I was anxious to take him to Redstone American Grill because I knew he would enjoy the cornbread. They serve it in a miniature cast iron pot with maple butter-oooh it’s just delish. What I didn’t plan for was him inviting Kayden. What exactly is the point of this thing if he is going to invite guests? So our dinner turned into more than just one-on-one time. Although, he did sit next to me and we had a chance to talk about a few (read one) things while Kayden ate.

Next up is the teen. That should prove to be more exciting. He is opting for a soul food joint and right now all I can think about is Ms. Tootsies but we’ll be researching to see if we have more options. Let’s hope ‘the situation’ doesn’t make her grand debut early and put a damper on his plans.

Here are a few ideas if you think this concept is what your family needs.

  • Visit a museum-see if there’s a special exhibit you know your child would enjoy
  • Take a train or a bus ride. Get off at stops that look interesting-you never know what you’ll find.
  • Have a daughter? What’s better than a side-by-side pedicure or manicure?
  • Watch a great movie together. There are still drive in theaters and now that the weather is cooling off, it might be your best bet. Check out driveinmovie.com to see if there’s one near you.

Are you able to get that much needed quality time in with each child in your household? Are you doing something similar to me? Let me know. Ciao!

We just implemented date night…one with mom and one with dad (twice a month). We got the idea from our neighbor…..so far, so good.
