The Damn Flu Shot
I’ve never received a flu shot-nor have I allowed the kids to get it. Something about this year is making me change my mind. You should know my mantra by now, “prevent, not cure” and by that I mean take care of yourself all year and you should be able to keep any illness away. I do natural herbs and ancient Trinidadian secrets to stay healthy. With all the kids in school, I’m a bit scared of them getting sick though. Even more scary is the thought of the baby getting sick. I saw this article two days ago and it got me to wanting the vaccine.
Today was the day. I was mentally ready and my office was having the vaccine administered right here on site. How did I miss the section on pregnant women needing a doctor’s note? I still went in and tried to tell her I wasn’t pregnant.
That didn’t work out too well. Once I get mentally ready for something and it doesn’t happen, it sets me back tremendously. I’ll still take the kids this weekend but I on the other hand will have to amp myself up again.
In the meantime, here are some statistics I found: According to Neil Schachter, professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, obesity lowers your immune response so you’re more likely to get complications of the flu if you’re overweight. So try to get in at least 30 minutes of regular exercise. Take 15 minutes to de-stress: According to Schachter, the body’s defense cells don’t work as well when you’ve got tons of stress hormones.
I make sure the kids wash their hands religiously but obviously that’s not enough. Especially when you can’t watch the other kids who might be walking germ containers. Not sure what my fear is but I’m so petrified of vaccines. Pray for me. Toodles.
