Version 2.0

There was this song…..I think Kanye West had a verse or two. The chorus was, “I Don’t Like It Unless It’s Brand New”. That used to be my motto. I now live by, I can wait for version 2.0. In fact, one of technology’s truisms is that version 2.0 is almost always much better than version 1.0. So it’s usually a good idea to wait.

I love Apple. I am at their stores at least 3 times a week just taking in the atmosphere. As anxious as I am to get the iPad, I followed the same rule with the iPhone and I was a happy camper. I don’t need my dollars to be in their test market. There’s a lot to like about the iPad, a beautiful 9.7-inch screen, it’s lightweight and feels so good in my hands that everytime I touch it (at my Apple store) I almost want to go ahead and pre-order it. It works much like an iPhone or iPod touch, so many people will already know how to interact with it, which is pretty cool.

Even though I surf the web on my iPhone, I can see the iPad as my third computer. I would love to be on the phone reading a book on the iPad. I can practically see myself in Tulum, lying on the beach with my new gadget. I own a Kindle but to tell you the truth, it has been sitting in my lingerie chest hanging out with the underwear. The screen technology of that e-reader doesn’t allow them to display colors and to me everything is better in color. In addition, the iPad’s e-book reader is full-color and fast. Articles that have video embedded within them can now be viewed without having to load a new page. That’s something you can’t do on a typical e-reader. Plus you can’t add apps to the iPad and can you imagine how Shop Style is going to look on that screen? Wowzers. I might never need to go shopping in a store again.

One thing I don’t do much of on my iPhone is watch videos. There are so many shows I can download off of iTunes but I never do because the screen is too small to me. With 10 hours of battery life and plenty of storage capacity, I could load it up with my favorite movies or shows for a long car or plane trip, giving me or my kids plenty to watch. Well not really the kids, because my Apple gadgets are off-limits. But they can ooh and ahhh whilst I enjoy it.

While there is so much you can do, there is still much you can’t do, that is, until version 2.0 comes out and addresses these shortcomings.

One of the main things I’m going to want to do with the iPad is surf the Web. But because it doesn’t support Flash, I won’t be able to see much of the content that’s out there, including videos from Hulu or many online games. I like to listen to Pandora too, and I hate when I go to check my email on the iPhone and the music cuts off. You can’t do this on the iPad either because the iPad, like its iPhone and iPod touch siblings, doesn’t multitask. That’s unfortunate, because the ability to run more than one program at once is an expected feature of nearly every other modern operating system —has anyone at Apple paid attention to how computers run? So until version 2.0 (fingers crossed) if you want to switch between apps, you’ll have to continuously close and reopen them.

Another thing missing from the iPad is a front-facing digital camera like Apple builds into its laptop computers. In plain talk, I can’t Skype from Tulum. What’s the point? How will I call in to Oprah’s show on Friday’s? Video calls would totally kill on the iPad and I could give the much needed visual to my island escapes.

Apple also apparently didn’t build into the iPad an easy, wireless way to project what’s on the device to a big-screen TV. So if I have a clip that I wish to show right away on the TV, I can’t. #comeonson

Alas, I am waiting. Things are always better the 2nd time around. I can’t lie though, it will kill me to see everyone with theirs. I will have to get something new to satisfy the craving. Are you taking a stance with me? Will you wait or will you bite the bullet and get the new now?
