Window Seat: To What Exactly?

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of Erykah Badu. Not that I don’t like her music, I am simply not one would consider a fan. I am digging her new track Window Seat and I do find some of her songs have me in here bopping and crooning but still, not a fan. You should also know that I am not a fan of anyone. Yes, how very boring of me. LOL

So she released the video for this single and you can see it here. I just don’t see the point of it. On my Twitter timeline, so many of my female counterparts “got it” but I didn’t. I for one have never had any issues with self-love, appreciation or any of the metaphors that this video seems to be. I recognize that there are people that do have these issues so this video was liberating to them. My question is, is this the only way one could liberate themselves, by taking off their clothes? I have absolutely no issues with my body. I could strip naked anywhere or anytime, but what exactly would be the point of that? Who or what am I actually proving something to? Me owning this body and flesh is far more an act of acceptance and self-love than stripping down for a bunch of strangers could ever be. I really don’t get it.

Everything I do these days relates to parenthood. Now that I am responsible for the livelihood of others, my choices in life require deep thought and follow through. So forget my views on it for a second. Is this how I would want my child to illustrate her liberation, her self- love. Ummm no. There are so many other ways that I think Ms. Badu could have gotten her message across (I’m still missing the message) but for now I just see it as what it is, a publicity stunt. It’s working and I guess that is the point. Did you get the point? Am I way off in left field? Let me know your thoughts.

  • I agree w/ShannonRenee that the historical spot was chosen to speak about assassination...for Badu, I think the nakedness represents her willingness to be vulnerable as an artist and person and the attacks she and others have suffered for being outside of the 'norm' and even how we judge ourselves to try and 'belong'...I also think the nakedness represented a Black female body that wasn't voiceless and deliberately displayed for the sexual/comercial pleasure of someone else...I specifically remember the online comments that were vicious verbal assassinations of Badu's character, last year or so, because she wasn't married to the father's of any of her children and she tweeted about consulting her family before making the video and whether they agreed, understood or not, they still said they supported her...I think what Kahlil Gibran says is true for all parents to remember 'your children are not your children..they come through you but not from you...you may house their bodies but not their souls' and yes there was an element of stunt to this because of the commercial aspect of having a product to sell...but I don't think that discredits what she was attempting to say.
  • Sista Badu made an interesting video, not that she took her clothes off...naked sista, really. It is interesting because of where the video is shot...on the infamous grassy knoll in Dallas. The video shot all that area, showing the book depository, the "X" where Kennedy was shot and the jail where Oswald was held and killed. Having been to the museum, stood on the "X" and sat in the grassy knoll, it is a moving, almost sacred, space.

For me, Sista Badu attempted to make a bold video, making history relevant. It is her commentary at the end of the video that brings it all together. However, and sadly, people will focus on her disrobing and not the message.
