A Day of Service-MLK ’11
For years I’ve wanted to take off from work and actually do something worthwhile on MLK day. I never have and I always felt badly. This year it was a blessing that I was home because it gave me the opportunity to find an activity to do with the kids and honor Dr. King at the same time. Kayden’s school put together an event where we could prepare bags to feed the homeless children at a local shelter. We decorated bags
For some reason my go to design always involves hearts, flowers and birds.
After the bags were done, we lined up to fill them with donations from the school community. Each bag needed a juice, a cocoa packet, two oatmeals and one milk.
Then it was time to load up the bags for delivery to the shelter
I thought this was a great service project because it gave me a chance to explain to the kids about the less fortunate and how happy we should be for all of our blessings. In addition, our activity today was right in line with the vision of Dr. King. We watched the infamous “I Have A Dream Speech” and I got all teary eyed.
It’s surreal to hear all the things he hoped for. As a people we’re so close but not quite there. I looked around the room and thought to myself that years ago what we were doing today would’ve never been but we were like one, working towards the same goal. I hope our small act today helps to continue his legacy but in the meantime I continue to educate the little ones about the importance of people like Dr. King because I don’t think the schools are doing enough. M’khai asked me what he stood for and I told him to use his computer time to come up with a few words about him.
It made my heart smile.
P.S. I am loving the Instagram app for the iPhone.
