Be Still: The Sunday Night Bond

For as long as I can remember, I hated Sunday evenings as a child. Not only was it the end of the weekend but it also meant I had to get my hair done. While everyone else was playing or watching their last bit of television, I had to sit and watch something educational in my parents’ room while I got my hair done. Wash. Detangle. Dry. Braid. This took hours!! Uggggghhhh.

One would think that since I have such negative memories about the whole process, there’d be no way I could impart the same experience on my daughter, right? Not. It’s like Sunday has become the official, fresh hairstyle day of the week. She gets her hair washed and styled every week on a Sunday. Lucky for her, she has her own room and she gets to watch Dora while her hair is done. It keeps her still. Now that I’m all grown up, I see the Sunday ritual as less of an inconvenience and more of a bonding moment for Kennedy and I. It keeps me still.

I came across this piece of artwork from Courtney Loveless that I ordered for the girls’ room. Exactly how she looks, is how I felt while getting my hair done.

Be Still

These days detangling my baby’s hair doesn’t have to be so intense. After her hair is washed, (I still use Johnson & Johnson shampoo) I apply Carol’s Daughter Tui Oil to her hair while wet. I let that sit a bit and I towel dry her hair before braiding. When her hair isn’t braided (I sometimes just twist it to give her hair a rest) I use Summit Liv as a daily conditioning creme. It’s really heavy so you only have to use a small amount to keep hair moisturized.

So far her hair’s doing really well with these products. Let me know if you have any memories of your childhood hair rituals. Do you find yourself doing the same things with your children?

Hated it! Same thing with me. I had a ton of hair and she would start on it after we got home from church and her dinner was cooking. The thing that bought back memories for me in the picture was the bow bag. I hated digging in that tangled mess to find hair bows!

My baby girl’s hair is just getting long enough to comb. I see Sundays being our ritual as well. I am really hoping she doesn’t take after her mother and be tender headed .

I was a twin and can remember arguing with my sister to see who would be the first to get their hair done! Looking back it was pain but I see now that it can be a bonding moment, not as torturous and (sorta) fun.

Ha! this is exactly how Omari’s hair was as a baby. I can’t make a braid to save my life, so my Mom had the privilege of braiding his hair. The task of washing it and not getting my whole torso wet, was the biggest challenge for me. For her! Having Barney’s Christmas on repeat was HER way of getting him to keep his head on her lap long enough to braid one side of his head. The other side was done when he slept.

Growing up I was always 4th in line after my 2 older cousins, and sister. Our hair was braided in chronological order of our age LOL. I had some down time. But I sure do relate to this post well.

Now I’m all nostalgic..gonna call my grandma lol

    Mimi,

Would “playing” in her hair now help any with the tender headedness? I didn’t even see that bow bag!! I too hated the one bag we worked with but now I have all of my girls’ bows and clips organized by color. A bit anal I suppose but based on experience. :) Thanks for reading!

Oh lawd, I remember falling asleep half way. Before I had Kennedy, you know Kayden’s hair was twisted and braided! I can’t braid either so mommy did it too. Mussbe a trini ting :)

Wow!!! That Courtney captured me so well (message) lol… I do remember my Sunday’s getting my hair done, Drama!! Sunday’s doing Essence hair compared to Sundays doing Elijah’s hair is like day & night… Essence was such a great kid she would sit there quietly & entertaining herself while I created masterpieces on her head. Elijah on the other hand keeps me fit. I would get one braid in & he’s gone. I’m literally running & braiding could you imagine the chaos. Until I discovered his two favorite movies now I’m able to get his hair done with ease.
