Be Still: The Sunday Night Bond
For as long as I can remember, I hated Sunday evenings as a child. Not only was it the end of the weekend but it also meant I had to get my hair done. While everyone else was playing or watching their last bit of television, I had to sit and watch something educational in my parents’ room while I got my hair done. Wash. Detangle. Dry. Braid. This took hours!! Uggggghhhh.
One would think that since I have such negative memories about the whole process, there’d be no way I could impart the same experience on my daughter, right? Not. It’s like Sunday has become the official, fresh hairstyle day of the week. She gets her hair washed and styled every week on a Sunday. Lucky for her, she has her own room and she gets to watch Dora while her hair is done. It keeps her still. Now that I’m all grown up, I see the Sunday ritual as less of an inconvenience and more of a bonding moment for Kennedy and I. It keeps me still.
I came across this piece of artwork from Courtney Loveless that I ordered for the girls’ room. Exactly how she looks, is how I felt while getting my hair done.
These days detangling my baby’s hair doesn’t have to be so intense. After her hair is washed, (I still use Johnson & Johnson shampoo) I apply Carol’s Daughter Tui Oil to her hair while wet. I let that sit a bit and I towel dry her hair before braiding. When her hair isn’t braided (I sometimes just twist it to give her hair a rest) I use Summit Liv as a daily conditioning creme. It’s really heavy so you only have to use a small amount to keep hair moisturized.
So far her hair’s doing really well with these products. Let me know if you have any memories of your childhood hair rituals. Do you find yourself doing the same things with your children?
