Culture Noir: Mortar & Pestle
I picked this tool up while I was in Trinidad and although my mom uses her to make pound plantain, I recently found another use for it which doesn’t involve food-well to eat at least. Every now and then, I like to give myself a facial involving some sort of mask. I did some research and found a few key ingredients which are great to use in your beauty regimen. Figs and Oats.
Figs make powerful cleansers due to their antioxidants and vitamins. The tiny seeds act as exfoliants and peel off dead skin. For an anti-aging boost, I add some olive oil, which stimulates cell regeneration and prevents and treats sun damage. Here’s the recipe:
Smash 2 or 3 figs, add in 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Rub this mixture onto your face, leave on for 5-10 minutes, rinse and enjoy your beautiful skin.
I have also been experimenting with oats. Beta glucan is a fiber that stimulates the repair of skin cells and reduces wrinkles. Raw honey and royal jelly work well to soothe skin and boosts cell regeneration. Try this recipe if you’re interested in repairing and protecting your skin. With the temperature soon changing to cooler and much harsher winds, this may be my weekly routine.
Combine 1 tbsp ground oats, 1 tbsp raw honey and 1/2 tsp. royal jelly and blend until creamy. Apply mixture to your face and leave on for about 20-30 minutes.
I am on a serious natural, no additives kick. These two recipes are working for me in that goal. I hope you enjoy them.
