My Funny Valentine
It’s an appropriate title because in the past, I was so pressed to get something on Valentine’s Day. Back when I was just dating my husband, he would surprise me with letters on my windshield (we lived in the same apartment complex) and he would buy me flowers for no particular reason. Whenever the 14th of February came around, it was funny how I never remembered those just because moments. All I knew was the the little, round, naked, white, cherub said we needed gifts and God help this man if I didn’t have something to show for it.
I saw a tweet today that sparked this post. A girl mentioned she was the only single woman in the office AND the only one that received flowers today. She said it was a shame and I wondered why. (She hasn’t replied yet) In case you didn’t know, today technically is the last day to prove to the world (read: your co-workers) that you have a man and he loves you because he managed to send you over-priced flowers to show it. I stopped being “that” woman many years ago. I find it so funny. I would much rather receive the “just because” flowers than the “oh shit it’s Valentine’s Day already?” flowers.
In fact, these days my “Cupid is a thief” day is much better spent. M’khai has a crush on a girl in class and I can’t wait to see how he differentiates her card from the other kids in the class. I get a much better kick out of creating memories with the kidlets and showering them with gifts than receiving anything from the hubby. A few of our traditions include making cards complete with notes about why we love each other. We make heart shaped pancakes and cupcakes and this year we will make sure we take pictures in our V-day pajamas.
I know how mushy it sounds but my husband gave me the best gifts for all the holiday’s already; the kids. Nothing beats celebrating Valentine’s Day with them; the look on their faces when they get their baskets from me says it all. Try something different this year and share what you do or plan to do with me. Motherhood has sure given me a different perspective on life and how you really show someone you care.
What are some of your traditions for V-day with the kids? Are you still one of those women that makes a big deal about getting a gift on the 14th? Fill me in.
