Go Gadget Go: Beaba Babycook & Zoku Popsicle Maker
You know I just love a good gadget. I could technically use the Cuisinart Food Processor that I bought ages ago that’s get little to no play now that I have the Ninja but that just wouldn’t be me. I bought my Beaba Babycook when Kayden was a baby (2006) and since I’ve had it I think I used it twice. It’s definitely getting more play now with baby Kai. This gadget coupled with my weekly delivery of fresh organic fruit and veggies from Suburban Organics means my baby is getting the healthiest meals possible and I just love cooking for her.
I peel the fruits and/or veggies and cut them up into this basket you see above. You see how that plastic basket is sitting within another container with the handle? Well depending on how much food you are making, you add water to the unit with the handle and deposit it into the base. The water gets heated in the base unit and then transfers underneath the basket. It’s pretty cool!
That transferring of water process is actually steaming the food you have in the basket.
They provide you with a tool to grab the basket and flip the contents out of into the processor (the container with the handle) because the unit gets very hot. Too hot to touch, which quite honestly is my only complaint with this unit. Even to take the cap off, it’s a task because it is too hot so I have to use a glove to free the food! Once your food is in the processor part (pic above) you cover, hook back up and give it a whirl so it blends to the consistency of your liking.
Now sure you could do this in a magic bullet, blender or a food processor but you would still have to steam the food first. This isn’t a must have baby item but it sure does make my life a whole lot easier. When the food is blended, you can just place it in storage containers in the fridge or freezer. It’s only because I have an addiction to Williams-Sonoma that I had to buy the storage containers too. You absolutely don’t have to.
Come to think of it, you could use an empty ice tray or little ziploc bags to store the food but if you want to be cute and chic, get this container. LOL Over here at Williams-Sonoma , it looks like they may have improved the product a bit. Maybe it’s not so hot, more importantly, my unit doesn’t have that orange insert. I’m calling them up!!
While I was in Williams-Sonoma ( I think I shop here once a week, I know it’s a sickness) I finally picked up the Zoku Popsicle Maker for the bigger kids. Can you say IN LOVE!!!
You freeze the entire unit for 24 hours and when it’s completely frozen, you add juice, fruit, yogurt or whatever you want in a popsicle and within minutes ( I say 7-10) you have homemade popsicles! Fantabulous!
I always have a fresh batch of Trinidad grapefruit juice in the fridge so I made a grapefruit/cran-pomegranate pospicle (Ocean Spray juices were $0.88 after coupons a few weeks back so I stocked up, I hope you’re couponing). It was delish. I can’t reiterate how easy it was to make these and they also sell a book that gives you tons of recipes so you don’t keep making the same popsicles each night.
You can make nine popsicles at a time before you will need to put the unit back to refreeze. Unless you’re having a party, there should be enough popsicles to go around for a household.
I spent $90 on a package W-S had for the 3 popsicle maker, the recipe book and a tool kit to make more intricate popsicles. I don’t think that was a bad deal. What do you think?
If you are near a Williams-Sonoma stop in, pick something up and tell them I sent you. Please pay for the item you picked up.
Until next time, toodles!!
